High voltage multiplier from televisor
On Warsaw's stock-exchange I found an TV high voltage multiplier. I knew a little about them and price was low (around 2 euro), so I've decided to buy it and test, how it will work. On right side of below photo a green multiplier is visible.
Toys :)
According to informations from Kronjaeger's page, I've connected HV transformer outputs to ~ and A pins of multiplier. For first test I've used next configuration:
- battery charger, 12V DC
- 2N3055 driver
- high voltage transformer from TV
The first thing I've done was making holes on papier with sparks :P Below you have victim's photo and short movie:
UFO! Run like hell! Downloadable version
Next I plugged a light bulb and made photo in three coloristics, white-black, natural and sepia. Nice, ain't?
Later I've changed configuration to more powerful and it contained:
- main toroidal transformer, 100W, 24V AC + smoothing capacitors/rectify bridge, which both gave 35V DC
- 2N3055 driver
- light bulb :)
It was looking less or more like that:

Wire with fat insulation and ending looking like UFO is a anode which has highest potential. Ions flows away from it.
Now the best - working circuit with disabled room light:

Voila!
Looks not bad, right? Tens of kilovolts, as nothing. Notice that I've wound a grounding wire around light bulb. Without it, there were only coronna around light bulb's filmament. Sparks comes not only from filament, but also from thread, which gives incredible acustic-visual effects. Multiplier cointains capacitors, so spark isn't continous, but pulse because of chargind and discharging time. Those pulses are quite loud, like as exploding little petards.
